Poetry looks simple to format — it’s not a lot of words. It isn’t simple. Every decision has to be made deliberately: how poems are positioned on the page, whether they’re set flush left or aligned to the longest line, how to handle poems with widely varying line lengths, where titles sit in relation to the verse. Contemporary poetry with multiple levels of indentation adds another layer of complexity. The answers aren’t the same for every collection.
