Mechanical Musical Instruments — David Fuller

Mechanical Musical Instruments as a Source for the Study of Notes Inégales — David Fuller — 1979

20 pages · 7.5×9 paperback · Pre-digital · Cover: ~3 hours

The first book in this portfolio, and a reminder of what book production looked like before desktop publishing. Text set by CompuGraphic phototypesetting. Music typeset for the book. Illustrations prepared as camera-ready art. The cover type was hand-set and printed to create the mechanical.

The book includes a gatefold, a pocket containing a phonograph record — mastered and manufactured for the project — and several pieces of music notation typeset specifically for the publication.

Today the same project would take one to two weeks. In 1979, it took considerably longer.
