Frederick Sommer — Luiz Carlos Felizardo

Frederick Sommer — Luiz Carlos Felizardo — 1996

102 pages · 9.5×6.5 paperback · Interior: ~35 hours

A monograph on the early years of photographer Frederick Sommer — a period that had received little scholarly attention. The content is mixed: critical text, direct quotations, chronology, and rare images including personal photographs and documents. Each type of content was given its own typographic treatment, with hierarchy established through spacing, indentation, and type rather than decorative elements.

The manuscript was short. The design was asked to give it appropriate weight — open layout, generous margins, a considered relationship between text and white space — in keeping with the aesthetic both Sommer and the author, himself an artist, brought to their own work. The images, though small, required significant preparation.
